Fun Fit Club - Program Overview |
 |
To improve the health of the community, Stamford Hospital, under the direction of Dr. Madhu Mathur, has organized a city-wide childhood obesity task force. The task force has met, expanded its membership and has launched Kids’ Fans, a childhood obesity prevention program. Kids’ Fans is devoted to improving children’s health and well-being over time through partnerships with all stakeholders in our community:
Stamford Hospital and SYF are pleased to announce their partnership and organization of programs aimed to provide fun fitness and nutritional education to build healthy families for the 21st century! We have created the “FUN FIT CLUB” designed for students in grades 1-5, offered on Saturday mornings. Classes include fun fitness (by Ronne Garber and Bodywise by Betty) and professional ‘kid-friendly’ nutritional education (by Stamford Hospital Nutritionists). A key tenet of the program is the 5-2-1-0 concept.

5 -2- 1- 0 Facts & Tips |
 |
Fact: Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and fat, making them a healthy choice anytime. They also contain vitamins, minerals and fiber, which benefit your health.
Tip: Add veggies to foods you already make, like pasta, soups, pizza and rice.
Fact: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have less than two hours a day of screen time and keeping the TV out of the bedroom.
Tip: Make a family agreement to limit TV/DVD/video watching or gaming to 2 hours (or less) a day and go to the park instead.
Fact: Regular physical activity is essential for weight maintenance and prevention of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis.
Tip: Walk more. Park farther from the door, take the stairs; plan family activities that involve walking- a hike or visit to the mall. Kick it up a notch, and walk faster than you usually do. Make it a game; count your steps with a pedometer.
Fact: The empty calories of soft drinks contribute to overweight and obesity; such weight gain is a prime risk factor for type 2 diabetes, which is now becoming a problem for teenagers for the first time.
Tip: Encourage your child to drink plain water. Tell your child that sugar has no nutritional value, adds calories and can promote tooth decay
