Boys Middle School Lacrosse |
 |
In the Spring of 2004 the Stamford Youth Foundation founded a middle school lacrosse program for boys and girls in order to introduce lacrosse to Stamford's middle school children. The program has operated successfully for five consecutive seasons.
In Spring 2008 there were 8 boys teams and 160 participants. Greater participation levels are expected for Spring 2009.
In past years, most Stamford players were new to the game beginning in 6th grade, and emphasis has been on instruction and fundamentals of lacrosse. However, beginning in 2009 SYF will offer more advanced travel teams that will compete against other towns in the CONNY league. These will be in addition to the school based teams. The travel teams have been facilitiated by the elementary program introduced in 2007 and the success of the middle school program. The program is led by Mr. Bob Cavaliero, who was instrumental in partnering with SYF to establish the program.
SYF's season runs from early April through early June, with boys teams playing 10 games during the season, plus playoffs. Practice is usually four days per week after-school. SYF provides most equipment to players, including helmet, shoulder pads and gloves. Players must purchase their own sticks. Games are played on Saturdays at Boyle Stadium (Stamford High).
