Softball Program Overview |
Stamford Babe Ruth Softball and the Stamford Youth Foundation have operated a middle school softball program for girls since 2004 in cooperation with Stamford Public Schools and the Mathew Kosbob Memorial Foundation. The season runs from late April through early June, with teams playing an 8 or 9 game regular season, plus playoffs. SYF's middle school softball program is intended to provide additional early-season experience to Stamford softball players as a supplement their Babe Ruth season and to help the girls prepare for high school. The program is operated by officials of Stamford Babe Ruth Softball led by Charles Pia.
There are 7 participating schools in the softball league; Rippowam, Dolan, Cloonan, Turn of River, Scofield, Trail Blazers and Trinity Catholic Middle School. Most players are in 7th or 8th grade and have completed their little league eligibility, but 6th graders are eligible to try out too. Practices are held one or two days per week after school at a field located close to each school. Games are played at Troy Field #1 in Cove Island Park. In Memory of Mathew Kosbob |
SYF's program is named the Mathew Kosbob Memorial Middle School Softball League in honor of Mathew Kosbob, a Stamford teenager who was attacked by other teenagers in the summer of 1995, entered a coma, and lost his life in 1998. Mathew was an enthusiastic and avid baseball player in Stamford. Since their tragic loss, his parents Bill and Maureen Kosbob have remained active in our community by promoting activities that positively engage our youth. They have funded this program in its entirety since inception, and no players pay a participation fee as a result. They have additionally partnered with SYF to similarly fund a girls softball program and they provide funding for scholarships for SYF's football players and cheerleaders. On behalf of SYF's participants, we thank the Kosbob's for their generous support of SYF and the Stamford community overall. More information on Mathew's story can be found at www.mathewkosbob.org
