Middle School Baseball Program

Stamford Youth Foundation has operated a middle school baseball program since 2002 with the support of Stamford Public Schools and the Mathew Kosbob Memorial Fund. The season runs from late April through early June, with teams playing an 8 or 9 game regular season, plus playoffs. SYF's middle school program is intended to provide additional early-season experience to Stamford baseball players to supplement their Babe Ruth or American Legion seasons, as well as to help encourage "school spirit" within each of the participating schools.

There are 7 participating schools in the league; Rippowam, Dolan, Cloonan, Turn of River, Scofield, Trinity Catholic Middle School and Trailblazers Academy. Most players are in 7th or 8th grade and have completed their little league eligibility, and there are 14 players on most teams. Practices are held one or two days per week after school at a field located close to each school. Most games are played at the Turn of River baseball field. For the 2009 season, the participating schools will also play non-league games vs. Greenwich's three middle schools in Greenwich. In memory of Mathew Kosbob

SYF's program is named the Mathew Kosbob Memorial Middle School Baseball League in honor of Mathew Kosbob, a Stamford teenager who was attacked by other teenagers in the summer of 1995, entered a coma, and lost his life in 1998. Mathew was an enthusiastic and avid baseball player in Stamford. Since their tragic loss, his parents Bill and Maureen Kosbob have remained active in our community by promoting activities that positively engage our youth. They have funded this program in its entirety since inception, and no players pay a participation fee as a result. They have additionally partnered with SYF to similarly fund a girls softball program and they provide funding for scholarships for SYF's football players and cheerleaders.
