| | | | | by Greg Dempsey posted 02/08/2010 Registration is open for Spring 2010 elementary and middle school lacrosse. There are important changes planned for the 2010 season, so please read the program descriptions below. The season will run late March to mid June. REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE ON MARCH 10.
There is a 2 step registration process.
1. Become a member of US Lacrosse. Membership costs $25. Players must first register with US Lacrosse before completing SYF's registration. US Lacrosse's registration link is ====> www.uslacrosse.org/membership/index.phtml
2. Register for SYF lacrosse by clicking the registration links below. You will be asked to provide your US lacrosse #. SYF's fees are listed below. For 2010 players will be responsible for providing their own equipment. Some SYF equipment will be available for scholarship students or others requesting it, as available.
Middle School $200 (Boys and Girls)
Elementary $150 (Boys and Girls)

==== > Elementary Girls Lacrosse
Middle School Girls
The SYF Girl's Lacrosse teams will be competing in the Connecticut New York Lacrosse Association (CONNY). CONNY is one of the nation's most respected youth lacrosse leagues and has taken the steps to organize the area's girl's programs, starting in the Spring 2009. Membership in CONNY will help us in scheduling new opponents, and training resources.
A schedule of at least 8 games is planned and practices will be targeted at 3x per week.
Middle School Boys
This year, SYF Middle School Boys Lacrosse has decided to change from a school based system to an age and ability based system. Teams will be formed based on age and ability. All teams will compete in CONNY Lacrosse, against teams from neighboring towns, of similar age and ability level.
We believe that this format will provide a better experience for all participants, through increased playing time, and ability focused training. We also believe that this approach will create an increased level of safety for the participants.
We plan on forming these ability based teams at the U-13 (6th&7th) and U-15 (7th & 8th) levels. There is no separate fee for a travel team, as our new program is essentially made up of travel teams.
For more information about CONNY Lacrosse, visit their website at www.connylacrosse.org.
A "Skills Evaluation", for the MS Boys, will take place Saturday, March 13, 2009, to determine the specific ability level of the participants. All MS Boys are required to participate in the evaluation. This evaluation will take place at Westhill HS. The evaluation will consist of drills and stations designed to allow the coaches to assess the participant's skills. We expect to notify the players of their teams and schedules, within a week of the evaluation. Equipment will be distributed prior to the evaluation first for scholarship participants first, then for others requesting loaner equipment. Exact times for the distribution and evaluation will be communicated to the registrants. Otherwise, players need to purchase their own equipment.
Team practices, games and locations will be detailed after the evaluation process and team selections are complete. CONNY conducts it formal scheduling session in mid February. Practices may be scheduled in the evenings or after school, dependent on the coaches schedules. There will be a minimum of 6-8 games played, including 3 home games in Stamford, plus post-season. Games may be played during the week as well as weekends. Added games may include competition between Stamford teams.
The SYF Lacrosse Committee will announce a parent/player meeting via the SYF website and eBlast to explain the final details of the program. We expect this meeting to take place during the last week of February or first week of March. We plan to begin practices during the last week of March.
Elementary Boys and Girls
The Elementary Boys and Girls programs are focused on developing the fundamental skills of the game. Groups typically work on skills and drills for the first hour of practice, then reinforce the skills learned, in a game/scrimmage session, during the last half hour of the practice. As in the past, the programs are typically separated into age and ability groups. Programs practice one evening during the week, and once on the weekends.
There will be a Boys U-11 travel team competing in the CONNY Lightning division. Player tryouts/evaluations will be conducted throughout the season for participation on the team. Team composition will be decided by the coaching staff, based on ability, and the roster composition may change, as player's skills develop during the season. There is no additional fee associated with the U-11 travel team. There will be a minimum of 6 elementary travel games plus post-season.
Coaches needed
SYF is looking for individuals with lacrosse experience to coach at all levels of our lacrosse program. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact Bob Cavaliero ( rjcav7@optonline.net) or Mike O'Connor ( mikeoco@me.com).
Our memberships with CONNY and US Lacrosse now provide us with outstanding resources for training and certifying our coaches. SYF has also partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance, to work with our coaching staff.
Summary
The goal of the SYF Lacrosse Program, across all divisions, is to provide equal opportunities for all players, instill a passion for the game, develop the skills necessary to take their game to the next level, all in a fun atmosphere. Your full support and cooperation is appreciated. Specific questions about the programs can be directed at the addressees below.

| | | | by Greg Dempsey posted 01/17/2010 Efforts to form a Stamford girls high school ice hockey team for the 2010-11 school year continue. The team would fill the void left by the shut-down of the Stamford Spinnakers and would be open to high school girls. The goal is to put together a combined city team with SHS and Westhill sponsorship that would compete in the CIAC.
So far, there has been good success in that a number of girls have committed. However, more are needed still. See the attached letter for more details.

| | | | by SYF posted 11/21/2009 Bodywise by Betty is offering weekly "Sports Yoga", or flexibility and strength training classes for female athletes aged 9 - 16 beginning January 12.
There is no meditation or chanting in this Yoga venue. Regardless of your sport (Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball, Swimming, Dance or Cheerleading) this class will HELP. This is a purely physical based yoga class with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, concentration & breathe work. Sports /Power Yoga is the ideal complement for young athletes looking to improve their performance and reduce the incidence of sports related injuries, while building strength, stamina, improved balance and flexibility.
Each class is designed to strengthen and stretch every area of the body. The biggest danger to injury during play is lack of flexi-bility and agility. Lack of speed or agility is often the result of tight hamstrings, calf muscles and hip flexors and IT bands. Heel pain can be a direct result of tightness of the Achilles tendon and can lead to chronic pain and debilitation if not addressed. ACL problems can be the result of weak quadriceps. IMPROVE PERFORMANCE, INCREASE RANGE OF MOTION and help reduce the risk of sports related injuries. The class will promote breathing, confidence, and mental focus in com-petitive situations. Breathe work teaches you how to breath more deeply thereby giving you longer endurance during play.
Sports Yoga also helps you to stay focused on the task at hand giving you the com-petitive edge. Each class will also include a segment on Sports Nutrition

SYF is pleased to present for the 6th consecutive year its scholar-athlete awards to our middle school football players and cheerleaders. This award is named in honor of Benjamin Gold, an exemplary student-athlete at Cloonan Middle School, and participant in SYF's football program who passed away in December 2003 during his 8th grade year. Ben was a bright and witty young man who is sorely missed by his family, friends and classmates.
SYF presents the Benjamin Gold Award to 8th grade participants in each of our programs who demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, leadership, sportsmanship and overall citizenship. Players are nominated by their coaches, school principals and team managers. The recipients receive a plaque and $100 savings bond recognizing their achievement. We congratulate this year's winners on their achievements and conduct.
