UPDATED *** Lacrosse Registration Open - Spring 2010 ***
by Greg Dempsey posted 03/05/2010

Registration is open for Spring 2010 elementary and middle school lacrosse.  There are important changes planned for the 2010 season, so please read the program descriptions below.  The season will run late March to mid June.  REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE ON MARCH 13.

There is a 2 step registration process.
1.  Become a member of US Lacrosse. Membership costs $25. Players must first register with US Lacrosse before completing SYF's registration.  US Lacrosse's registration link is ====> www.uslacrosse.org/membership/index.phtml

2.  Register for SYF lacrosse by clicking the registration  links below. You will be asked to provide your US lacrosse #. SYF's fees are listed below. SYF has a limited supply of equipment for loan, which will be available for scholarship students or others requesting it, on a first come first serve basis.

Middle School   $200  (Boys and Girls)
Elementary        $150  (Boys and Girls)

==== > Middle School Boys Lacrosse - 2010
==== > Middle School Girls Lacrosse - 2010
==== > Elementary Boys Lacrosse
==== > Elementary Girls Lacrosse

Middle School Girls
The SYF Girl's Lacrosse teams will be competing in the Connecticut New York Lacrosse Association (CONNY). CONNY is one of the nation's most respected youth lacrosse leagues and has taken the steps to organize the area's girl's programs, starting in the Spring 2009. Membership in CONNY will help us in scheduling new opponents, and training resources.
A schedule of at least 8 games is planned and practices will be targeted at 3x per week.  Practices may be in the evenings or after-school. Timing it TBD and will depend on coaches.

Middle School Boys
This year, SYF Middle School Boys Lacrosse has decided to change from a school based system to an age and ability based system. Teams will be formed based on age and ability. All teams will compete in CONNY Lacrosse, against teams from neighboring towns, of similar age and ability level.

We believe that this format will provide a better experience for all participants, through increased playing time and ability focused training. We also believe that this approach will create an increased level of safety for the participants.

We plan on forming these ability based teams at the U-13 (6th&7th) and U-15 (7th & 8th) levels. There is no separate fee for a travel team, as our new program is essentially made up of travel teams. It is anticipated that there will be at least one advanced "A" team at each level.

For more information about CONNY Lacrosse, visit their website at www.connylacrosse.org

A "Skills Evaluation", for the MS Boys, will take place Saturday, March 13, 2009, to determine the specific ability level of the participants. All MS Boys are required to participate in the evaluation. This evaluation will take place at Westhill HS at 10:00 am.

SYF equipment will be available for use in the tryout by all registered players.
Parents may also choose to purchase SYF's used equipment at this time at a cost of $100.
This includes a helmet, gloves, arm pads and shoulder pads.

On March 13 SYF will be selling surplus equipment only on a first come-first served basis.  It will keep equipment in stock for the 2010 season for SYF players.  For 2011, SYF plans to retain equipment only for scholarship players and other hardship situations.

Players should arrive at 9:30 if they wish to use or purchase SYF equipment.
Evaluations begin at 10:00.  During the evaluations SYF Lacrosse officials will be available to answer questions and explain 2010's plans.

Team practices, games and locations will be detailed after the evaluation process and team selections are complete. CONNY conducts it formal scheduling session in mid February. Practices may be scheduled in the evenings or after school, dependent on the coaches schedules.  There will be a minimum of 6-8 games played, including 3 home games in Stamford, plus post-season. Games may be played during the week as well as weekends.  Added games may include competition between Stamford teams.  We plan to begin practices during the last week of March.

Elementary Boys and Girls (Grades 2-5)
The Elementary Boys and Girls programs are focused on developing the fundamental skills of the game. Groups typically work on skills and drills for the first hour of practice, then reinforce the skills learned, in a game/scrimmage session, during the last half hour of the practice.  As in the past, the programs are typically separated into age and ability groups. Programs practice one evening during the week, and once on the weekends.

There will be a Boys U-11 travel team competing in the CONNY Lightning division. Player tryouts/evaluations will be conducted throughout the season for participation on the team. Team composition will be decided by the coaching staff, based on ability, and the roster composition may change, as player's skills develop during the season. There is no additional fee associated with the U-11 travel team.

Coaches needed
SYF is looking for individuals with lacrosse experience to coach at all levels of our lacrosse program. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact Bob Cavaliero (rjcav7@optonline.net) or Mike O'Connor (mikeoco@me.com).

Our memberships with CONNY and US Lacrosse now provide us with outstanding resources for training and certifying our coaches. SYF has also partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance, to work with our coaching staff.

Summary
The goal of the SYF Lacrosse Program, across all divisions, is to provide equal opportunities for all players, instill a passion for the game, develop the skills necessary to take their game to the next level, all in a fun atmosphere. Your full support and cooperation is appreciated.  Specific questions about the programs can be directed at the addressees below.

FBU's quarterback coaches privately trained Tom Brady, Eli Manning and Matt Ryan. FBU's other coaches have privately trained the NFL's best at RB, WR, OL, DB, DL, LB and DB. Nominate yourself today to attend the nation's premiere football camp: Football University.

FBU is giving be Recruited users a chance to nominate themselves and earn a slot to attend the camp, giving you membership to an exclusive, elite football club. FBU alumni include former Rivals top-100 players like Terrelle Pryor (Ohio State), Bryce Brown (Tennessee), Cierre Wood (Notre Dame), Christine Michael (Texas A&M), Randall Carroll (UCLA), Tom Savage (Rutgers), to name a few. And you could be part of that list, but only if you're selected.

"While All-Pro Andre Rison worked with receivers, retired Giants back Rodney Hampton helped running backs and Super Bowl starter Perry Williams assisted defensive backs, I had a cup of coffee with two of the best minds in quarterbacking." - Sports Illustrated

Log on to http://footballuniversity.org/nominations.php to nominate yourself. Our network of regional directors and instructors will review your nomination application and conduct additional research on your football ability. You'll be contacted regarding your status within four weeks. If selected, you'll attend one of FBU's 30 camps held across the nation in 2010.

"This was not just another football camp. This elite camp showcased talent from around the region." - Naperville Sun

FBU focuses on developing and enhancing the technique and skill of elite-level prep athletes. Modeled after NFL mini-camps, each camp provides three days of intense training-both on the field and off-including technique drills, film study, classroom testing, and access to hi-tech equipment, all under the professional tutelage of former NFL players and coaches. Our NFL instructors have personally trained Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Tony Romo, as well as last season's NFL Rookie of the Year Matt Ryan.

Odyssey of the Mind Showcase is March 6 from 9:45am-1pm at Domus
by Regan Allan posted 03/02/2010

You are invited to the SYF and Parent Teacher Council sponsored, Odyssey of the Mind Showcase on March 6th, with performances and hands-on activities from 9:45am-11:30am and 12noon-1pm at Domus (old Rogers building at 83 Lockwood Avenue). Admission is free.

Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities and team building with the opportunity to learn brainstorming, self-reliance, and respect for individual strengths. OM allows all students to succeed, regardless of being labeled educationally advantaged or disadvantaged or having high or low test scores.

All participating teams are given the choice of the same five long term problems to solve, though these problems change from year to year. The nature of the problems inc or p or ates the use of critical thinking skills and creativity. The problems usually include a “vehicle” problem, a mechanical problem, a “classics” problem, a balsa wood structure problem and a strictly dramatic problem. The teams are also given spontaneous problems to solve whichfall into one of three categories: verbal, hands-on or a combination of both. Teams never know ahead of time which type of problem they will be required to solve, so it is an intense "think on your feet" experience.

Last year was the first year of OM in Stamford as a district-wide program. After feedback from parents, teachers, and administrators asking for enrichment programs in Stamf ord due to budget cuts, SYF decided to start the program and PTC enthusiastically decided to help. This year, Stamford has eleven teams from ten elementary and middle schools. The teams, coached by parents and teachers, started meeting in October and met weekly or more at individual schools. Teams also participated in spontaneous scrimmages throughout the year. They will compete in a State Competition at the end of March, with the possibility of qualifying for Worlds in May.

For more information, visit www.stamfordyouth.org,  www.odysseyofthemind.com  and www.ctom.org or contact Regan Allan, regana@optonline.net, 961-1456

Flexibility and Strength Training class for Female Athletes
by SYF posted 11/21/2009

Bodywise by Betty is offering weekly "Sports Yoga", or flexibility and strength training classes for female athletes aged 9 - 16 beginning January 12.

There is no meditation or chanting in this Yoga venue. Regardless of your sport (Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball, Swimming,  Dance or Cheerleading) this class will HELP. This is a purely physical based yoga class with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, concentration & breathe work. Sports /Power Yoga is the ideal complement for young athletes looking to improve their performance and reduce the incidence of sports related injuries, while building strength, stamina, improved balance and flexibility.

Each class is designed to strengthen and stretch every area of the body. The biggest danger to injury during play is lack of flexi-bility and agility. Lack of speed or agility is often the result of tight hamstrings, calf muscles and hip flexors and IT bands. Heel pain can be a direct result of tightness of the Achilles tendon and can lead to chronic pain and debilitation if not addressed. ACL problems can be the result of weak quadriceps. IMPROVE PERFORMANCE, INCREASE RANGE OF MOTION and help reduce the risk of sports related injuries. The class will promote breathing, confidence, and mental focus in com-petitive situations. Breathe work teaches you how to breath more deeply thereby giving you longer endurance during play.

Sports Yoga also helps you to stay focused on the task at hand giving you the com-petitive edge. Each class will also include a segment on Sports Nutrition
